چکیده

Growth and surface morphology of epitaxial Fe(110)/MgO(111)/Fe(110) trilayers constituting a magnetic tunnel junction were investigated by low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). STM reveals a grain-like growth mode of MgO on Fe(110) resulting in dense MgO(111) films at room temperature as well as at 250 C. As observed by STM, initial deposition of MgO leads to a partial oxidation of the Fe(110) surface which is confirmed by Auger electron spectroscopy. The top Fe layer deposited on MgO(111) at room temperature is relatively rough consisting of clusters which can be transformed by annealing to an atomically flat epitaxial Fe(110) film.

Spin-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy of the MgO/Fe(110) system

The surface structure and electronic properties of ultrathin MgO layers grown on epitaxial Fe(110) films were investigated at room temperature by means of electron diffraction, Auger electron spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, and spin-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. The spin polarization at the Fermi level (EF) of the Fe(110) film decreases sharply with increasing thickness of t...

Electronic and structural properties of ultrathin MgO layers grown on epi-taxial Fe(110) films were investigated at room temperature by means of spin-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, Auger-electron spectroscopy, and low energy electron diffraction. The spin polarization at the Fermi level of the Fe(110) film decreases abruptly with increasing thickness of MgO layer up to 7 ˚ A. This behavio...

Magnetic profiles and coupling in Fe/Cr(110) superlattices

In epitaxial Fe/Cr superlattices the coupling between the Fe layers oscillates between antiferromagnetic (AFM) and ferromagnetic as a function of the Cr layer thickness tCr. The period of the oscillation is the same for superlattices grown with (211) and (100) orientations. We measured the coupling of Fe/Cr(110) superlattices consisting of three identical Fe layers. The magnetization curves wer...

Morphology and strain - induced defect structure of ultrathin epitaxial Fe films on Mo „ 110 ...

Fe films in a coverage range of 0.4<u<4.7 ML were deposited on a Mo~110! substrate in the 300<T <700 K temperature range. It is found that growth around 300 K is mediated by the step-flow growth mechanism, in contrast with previous studies of the Fe/Mo~110! and Fe/W~110! systems, where growth at 300 K was mediated by two-dimensional island nucleation and coalescence. This difference is attribut...

Nanoscale Phase Separation in Fe,O,(lll) Films on Sapphire(OOO1) and Phase Stability of Fe,O,(OOl) Films on MgO(001) Grown by Oxygen-Plasma-Assisted Molecular Beam Expitaxy

Nanoscale phase separation in Fe304(l 11) films on sapphire(0001) and phase stability of Fe304(001) films on MgO(001) grown by oxygen-plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy We report a phase instability in oxygen-plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy of Fe304 films on sapphire (0001) substrates. Under a wide range of growth conditions, Fe304 (111) films phase separate, on a nanometer length sc...
